WEEK 14

25/07/2021

Prior to our lesson, we were informed last minute that our lesson will be conducted online instead of in campus due to COVID-19 measures. We felt sad as we were really excited to see each other in campus but we could not do that in the end.

For our lesson this week, we learnt about product sketches as well as product specifications. Sketching and technique is a key for creative expression in product design. It is a technique that we need to learn as we have to build a prototype for product in subsequent weeks. Hence, learning how to sketch and draw will help us to come up with a draft for our product, so we are clear of how to build our prototype based on the draft we sketched. Sketches and drawing also helps us to visualize our product and allow us to provide any further refinements and revisions of the product.

To start off, we did some basic sketches of lines, curves, circles, and ellipses. These are commonly and widely used in sketching or drawing and hence it is necessary to start learning from the basics. Thereafter, we learnt about 1-point perspective drawing and 2-point perspective drawing. 1-point perspective drawing means that the drawing has a single vanishing point 2-point perspective drawing is defined 2 vanishing points that represents 2 convergence points and infinite distance away. Then, class activity 1 requires us to apply the sketching and drawing techniques we had learnt onto our product sketch.

For the second part of the lesson, we were introduced to design specifications. Design specifications provide us with the information they need to build out new features of functionality of a product. It includes material specifications, functional/performance specifications, standard specification as well as test standard. Lastly, class activity 2 requires us to come out with our own design specifications table which is shown below.

Overall, through this lesson, we acquired the basic skills of sketching and drawing which will definitely benefit us in our product design as we can apply the skills acquired today whenever we are designing a product and requires a design sketch. In addition, we learnt how to prepare a design specifications table for our product which is also crucial when it comes to product design. The design specifications allows the consumer to understand our product better as it highlights the key aspects of our product.
