On our fifth lesson, we were introduced to materials for design and how to select the most suitable materials for our product. We were taught that a good material choice would be a material with property attributes that meets or exceeds the requirement of a product and at the same time does not possess manufacturing difficulties and is not exorbitant in price.
During the lesson, we had a class activity where learnt about the various type of material available. This activity require us to select a material available to further research on. The database on Blackboard provided many information about the various types of materials available. My group chose to work on Shape Memory Alloy (SMAs) as it was a material we have never heard of and we were really interested to find out about the self-healing ability SMAs possess. Here is the Worksheet for Week 5 Activity that we have prepared.
The product that our group selected is a automated cat litter box. The automated cat litter box consists of a variety of components and layers with each requiring different material. Based on the sketch that we have came up with in Week 3, we were able to identify certain materials that can be used to build our cat litter box. With the help of the database, we would be able to select the most suitable material to build our product.
