Planning for Our First Chemical Product Design
On our second week of lesson, we were introduced to literature review and learnt about how to effectively evaluate our research. We then had to gather in our groups and start choosing and planning for our first chemical product design. Firstly, my groupmates and I had a brainstorming session as we thought about how we can do our parts to design something that would be beneficial to most people.
A literature review is a survey of literature such as books, articles, write-ups, and other sources that help you address the important issues, theories, and concepts relevant to the research area. It examines sources relevant to the research area and aims to provide a critical evaluation and summary of them. It also critically analyses the information gathered by identifying gaps in current knowledge; by showing limitations of theories and points of view; and by formulating areas for further research and reviewing areas of controversy.
Our first idea was a mild detergent for face masks. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face masks has become a part of our daily lives. However, washing the reusable face masks daily can be quite a hassle. Hence, for my group, we chose to design a special type of detergent specifically used to wash face masks. From the product to the packaging, this detergent will be made with only environmental-friendly resources.
However, we were encouraged to design something6 with automated moving parts instead of designing a product involving formulation. After some discussion, we decided to do an automated cat litter box. One of our group members who owns a cat, often shared how tedious it is and how messy it can get when cleaning the cat litter box manually. Hence, we thought that an automated cat litter box would be very useful and beneficial to all cat owners out there.
After deciding on what we want to design, we started researching for resources online and we had to apply what we learnt by using the literature review template to evaluate our research. This is the Literature Review Template our group came up with.
